Satellite phones are becoming more common and fortunately a little less expensive than in years past. One main reason you may want one of these high-tech devices is that most natural disasters won’t affect a satellite hovering many miles above the Earth. A solar flare, anti-satellite attack, or EMP burst could theoretically render them instantly useless, but as interesting as some of those scenarios might be, they are unlikely when compared to a hurricane, flood, earthquake, or other natural disaster right around us. These types of emergencies, on the ground or within our atmosphere, happen far more often.

I found three major companies that provide satellite phones and service: Iridium, Globalstar, and Inmarsat. Because technology, cost per minute, promotions, and new satellite launches change the landscape regularly, you should do your own research before making a decision.

As you can see in the picture (Figure 11-1), the Iridium satphone is not very large, especially if you were thinking you needed to set up a portable satellite dish to use one, like in the old days! Other manufacturers’ consumer model phones are usually about the same size.
